Frequently asked questions

How does the app measure sound?

Decibel Detector uses your iPhone's microphone and applies industry-standard A-weighting (the same frequency curve used by professional sound level meters) to show loudness in dB(A), which reflects how human hearing perceives sound.

How accurate are the readings?

Readings are estimates intended for everyday awareness. iPhone microphones vary between models, so the app is not a substitute for a certified, professionally calibrated sound level meter.

What does the 85 dB warning mean?

85 dB(A) is the level at which health organizations such as NIOSH advise that extended exposure (8 hours or more) can begin to damage hearing. The louder the sound, the shorter the safe exposure time.

Does the app record or store audio?

No. Audio is analyzed in real time entirely on your device and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted anywhere. See our Privacy Policy.

Why does the app ask for microphone access?

Microphone access is required to measure sound levels — that's the app's entire purpose. It is used only while the app is open and measuring.

Is the app really free?

Yes. No ads, no in-app purchases, no subscriptions.
